Greek Citizenship / Passport

Greek citizenship is not determined by the place of birth, deriving from the notion of “jus soli” (Latin: right of soil), but by having ancestors who are citizens of the state, a legal concept known as “jus sanguinis” (Latin: right of blood). Thus, in order to acquire Greek citizenship, it is irrelevant whether you were born in Greece. All that matters is that one of your ancestors is Greek. That automatically gives you the right to acquire citizenship by descent, without any other prerequisites, such as minimum time spent as resident in the country.

Many Greeks of the Omogenia feel indifferent to the idea of acquiring Greek citizenship. Bureaucracy, lack of information, mistrust for the Greek state, all are contributing factors. We know how you feel. However, citizenship gives you the right to procure a Greek passport. According to Henley Passport Index for 2019 (https://www.henleypassportindex.com/passport-index) Greece disposes the 6th most powerful passport in the world, giving you access to 184 countries without the need for a visa. Moreover, it allows the holder not only to live and work in Greece, but also throughout the European Union. Greece, unlike other western countries, has excellent diplomatic relations with the Arab world, China, Russia and Latin America. Therefore, a Greek passport holder has the advantage of travelling easily and safely.
